In this allegorical image two female figures represent Europe and America, with ships on an ocean between them. At left, Europe points to a globe and is accompanied by objects that symbolize the arts and sciences. At right, America holds the Stars and Stripes and stands near a portrait of George Washington over a snake. The latter was associated with the slogan "unite or die," used during the American Revolution to encourage colonists who fought for independence. Seated next to America, a small Black boy sits and reads.
