A student of William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, Ethel Myers is known for her humorous and satirical depictions of women from different social classes, often wearing exaggerated fashions. A dress and hat designer herself, Myers brought a sure hand and eye to her characterizations of different urban types—matrons, flappers, and celebrities. This body of work positioned her among the few women within the circle of early 20th-century urban realists, alongside better-known male members of the so-called Ashcan group and her husband, Jerome Myers. This engaging watercolor sketch captures Myers graceful line, nuanced color, sharp wit, and personal sense of style.
