Spruce gum box in book form

On View Gallery Watson Library

This box is carved of solid softwood, with separate ends. The carving includes male and female profiles, plants, spine bands, and a clasp with a double heart design. Two sayings are incised on the book: “Duty first and Pleasure after- wards”; and “Tow [two] things to forget. A good deed done to another or a bad one done to myself, on the other.” Details are painted in red, green and black.
