Box in book form, carved with roses

On View Gallery Watson Library

The front cover of this hinged box is carved in high relief with stems of rose and camellia, and lines suggesting traditional book corners. The rounded spine is carved to suggest two pairs of raised bands. The box’s foredge is concave to resemble a book, its edges are painted gold, and the box is lined with red flock paper. The back was nailed to the case walls and was left undecorated.
