Not on view

At the end of the eighteenth century, the Neoclassical taste in European fashions brought about a desire for elegant simplicity. Softly flowing white gowns became de rigueur. As a result, fine white Bengali muslins began to replace brightly colored Gujarati printed cottons as the primary Indian textile import. Ancient Romans described delicate Indian cottons as "woven air," and the draped garments they fashioned of this cloth are thought to have inspired the Neoclassical style, seen here in the narrow silhouette of this open robe and underdress.
