Ma Lin Chinese

Not on view

Ma Lin was the son of Ma Yuan, a leading court painter of Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279) and key figure in the history of the album format. Like his father, Ma Lin excelled at making crystalline images of flowers, stripping away extraneous elements to allow a boldly composed image to shine. This work, which survives as an individual leaf, may originally have been part of a thematic album, perhaps focusing on seasonal flowers.
