May Suydam Palmer

May Suydam Palmer (ca. 1870–1941) studied painting with John White Alexander in New York and sculpture with Auguste Rodin in Paris. She posed for several portraits by MacMonnies, some of which were painted at Giverny. According to the inscription on the portrait, it was given as a birthday gift in 1903 to the pianist and composer Courtlandt Palmer, the sitter's brother.
