Henry La Tourette de Groot
Henry de Groot (1789–1835) was born in Bound Brook, New Jersey, a member of an old New York family of Dutch ancestry. He was the son of William de Groot, a lieutenant in the Continental Army. Henry de Groot was a prosperous importer in New York but moved his wife and children to London in 1831 where he is said to have lived in style. He died in London. His daughter Fanny married Dr. Thomas Hastings, President of the Union Theological Seminary. Their son, Thomas Hastings, became a partner in the New York architectural firm of Carrere and Hastings, which designed the New York Public Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. This picture, with its tight, smooth manner, was probably painted around 1825 or 1830. It is a fine example of the formula used by the artistic team, enriched by a greater attention to the sitter’s hands and letter.
