Evening cloak

1885–89
Not on view
The chinoiserie print covered in the vermiculate gold chainstitch alongside the contrasting embroidered net trim encompasses the wearer in lavish exoticism. It was fashionable in the period to seek such exoticism in home furnishings as well as fashion. The design vocabulary of the world was often reinterpreted in embroidery styles throughout the period.
