Side Chair
This chair and its mate were originally produced for the Plainfield, New Jersey home of John Taylor Johnston, the first president of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The architect, James Renwick, may have also designed the chairs. They are fine examples of the Renaissance revival style, featuring a molded outer back edge, incised decorative lines, and legs with channeled columns. The vertical member between the front seat rail and the stretcher is purely decorative.
