Pieced wool quilt
The top of this quilt is pieced together from a number of heavyweight twill-weave wool fabrics in red, black, and cream. Most of the fabrics appear to be fragments of previously used felted-wool blankets, and some look as if they may have been handwoven. The back is pieced of printed plaid cotton men's shirting fabrics. The top has a central panel of three narrow stripes (black/cream/black), surrounded by four red rectangles, and side borders of rectangles of black and cream. There is a blue-cotton edge binding and a twill fabric interlining. It is quilted with straight lines in black cotton thread. The pieced fabrics on both the top and back have been machine-stitched, but the quilting stitches are done by hand.
This quilt was purchased by the donor in Rochester, New York, just across Lake Ontario from the area of Canada where pieced-wool quilts like this one were once quite common.
