Thumb glass
Not on view
The distinctive color and surface details of this vessel are characteristic of the centuries-long tradition of Waldglas (forest glass), so called because small Central European glasshouses were often located in the forest, near plentiful sources of fuel. Forest glass is typically green with raised blobs, or prunts, which make for a better grip. By contrast, this large cup has circular indentations that allow fingers—usually thumbs—to be inserted. It can then be safely lifted, even when filled with beer.
