Jaguar
Anna Hyatt Huntington American
Huntington was one of the most prominent animal sculptors of the early twentieth century, celebrated for her keen powers of observation. “Jaguar” and its companion piece, “Reaching Jaguar” (26.85.1), were based on Huntington’s studies of Señor Lopez, a jaguar from Paraguay who was the first feline occupant of the Lion House at the Bronx Zoo. Stone versions of the pair are installed as gateposts at the zoo.
