Terracotta column-krater (bowl for mixing wine and water)

Attributed to the Orchard Painter

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 157

Obverse, women gathering apples
Reverse, two youths and two women

This scene of five women gathering apples into wicker baskets is taken from daily life, but it brings to mind representations of the beautiful Hesperids, who guarded a tree of golden apples that brought immortality.
