Powder Flask

German, Saxony

Not on view

The body of flattened cow horn is decorated overall with a series of large and small concentric circles inlaid with wood and staghorn (some tinted green), and studded with crosslets, stars, and dots of brass. In the centers of the largest circle on the front and back is an orb and cross. Gilt-brass mounts at each end are engraved with foliate scrolls and geometric patterns. The nozzle, which also served as a powder measure, has a spring-operated cap and a cutoff screen. A screw attaches a long belt hook to the left side of the cover.
