This photograph, along with two others on view in the exhibition, record the 1923 exhibition "Recent Paintings by Pablo Picasso and Negro Sculpture." Featured is the Fang reliquary head exhibited nearby, surrounded by Picasso’s Guitar, Clarinet, and Bottle on a Pedestal Table (1916), Female Nude (J’aime Eva) (1912–13), and a series of stencils of about 1920. While a number of the works by Picasso were sold during the exhibition, all the African works were returned afterward to their owner, Paul Guillaume. The head was sent back to France, but most of the other African works seen in the photographs were acquired from Guillaume by an American client, the collector Dr. Albert C. Barnes.
