The pioneering mission of Kongo’s first ambassador to the Vatican is chronicled by this print issued soon after his death. The central half-length portrait of the subject is encircled by the legend Lord Antonio Manuele, Marquis of Funta, ambassador of the King of Congo to the Supreme Pontiff. The tomb-like structure framing this depiction features captioned vignettes of notable episodes related to the event. Below the portrait, the skull and crossbones in a maritime scene refer to Antonio Manuel’s death at the end of his journey from Kongo. At upper right, he is carried in a litter to the apostolic palace; in the succession of counterclockwise images that follows, he kneels to receive a papal benediction, is given last rites by Pope Paul V, and is carried in a funerary procession to Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome.
