D. Antonius Emanuel Marchio de Wnth Orator Regis Gongi ad Summu[m] Pont
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. The pioneering mission of Kongo’s first ambassador to the Vatican is chronicled by this print issued soon after his death. The central half-length portrait of the subject is encircled by the legend Lord Antonio Manuele, Marquis of Funta, ambassador of the King of Congo to the Supreme Pontiff. The tomb-like structure framing this depiction features captioned vignettes of notable episodes related to the event. Below the portrait, the skull and crossbones in a maritime scene refer to Antonio Manuel’s death at the end of his journey from Kongo. At upper right, he is carried in a litter to the apostolic palace; in the succession of counterclockwise images that follows, he kneels to receive a papal benediction, is given last rites by Pope Paul V, and is carried in a funerary procession to Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome.
