Dower Chest

1700–1800
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
A very similar chest in a private collection, which is inscribed with the date 1776 on the bottom of one of the outer panels, provides evidence for a more precise dating of this chest. Inside the lid of this chest are a watercolor drawing of a scene featuring a parrot, attributed to Henrich Otto, see 34.100.66, and a printed house blessing with a border of hearts and flowers, drawn by an unidentified hand and dated 1785.
