The Departure of the Sons of Tippoo Sultan from the Zenana

1793
Not on view
Brown's design dramatizes the aftermath of a key Indian military defeat of 1792. Tipu Sultan of Mysore stands outside his fortress of Seringapatum and sends away his two young sons to become British hostages. This separation was imposed upon Tipu to force his adherence to the terms of a punitive peace treaty. Brown's design inserts accurate details of costume and accoutrements into an imaginative construction based on European models. Bartolozzi's stipple engraving was hand-colored to help the viewer distinguish the large cast of participants.
