"Modes d'Hiver": Cover Design for "Harper's Bazar"

Erté (Romain de Tirtoff) French, born Russia
1921
Not on view
Soon after designing his first cover for Harper’s Bazar in 1915, Erté received a ten-year contract to work exclusively for the magazine. He ultimately contributed over 240 covers featuring his signature art-deco style illustrations to the fashion glossy between 1915 and 1936. The covers, which combine large swaths of uninterrupted color with minute, whimsical details, presage his numerous stage set designs.
