Picturesque Views on the River Thames, from its source in Gloucestershire to the Nore: with Observations on the Public Buildings and Other Works of Art in its Vicinity, 2 Vols.
(1) Vol. I: Half title, illustrated title page, title page, dedication (i)-xiv, list of prints, engraved map, pp. 209 and 27 aquatint plates depicting views along the river Thames. (2) Vol. II: Half title, illustrated title page, title page, list of plates, engraved map, pp. 258 with 25 aquatint plates, errata, publisher's notice.
These volumes offer a guide to sites along the Thames including Blenheim Castle, Windsor Castle, London bridges, Westminster Abbey, and Greenwich Hospital. The aquatints are based on drawings by Ireland, who published a series of river guides, starting with "A Picturesque Tour through France, Holland, Brabant...made in 1789" (22.106.65(1-2)), followed by the present work, then "Picturesque Views on the River Medway" (1793) (22.106.63), and "Picturesque Views on the River Wye" (1797). The shift to subjects closer to home was encouraged by Britain's long war with Revolutionary and Napoleonic France, which lasted from 1793 to 1815.
