Orange Hoop
Frankenthaler made her first print in 1961 after being invited by the publisher Tatyana Grosman to create a lithograph at ULAE (Universal Limited Art Editions). Lithography was closer to painting than other printmaking techniques and Frankenthaler excelled at the practice. She capitalized on the fluidity of the tusche wash, which she used to paint the lush orange frame in a single stroke. The technique furthermore allowed her to create color stains, such as those found in her paintings. Frankenthaler also responded to the shape and surface of lithographic stones. Here, the aforementioned orange frame with the opening at the bottom mimics the stone’s rectangular form. Yellow triangular corners are visually linked with the orange hoop of the title; the two frame an irregular green triangle suspended weightlessly in the interior.
