Landscape with figure

Chen Jichun Chinese
1635
Not on view
Nothing is known of Chen Jichun, who painted this fan in the waning years of the Ming dynasty. A red-robed scholar sits in a humble thatched pavilion beneath towering pines, frequently used symbols of virtuous character. The ropy, layered brushstrokes used to texture the rock and mountain surfaces call to mind the fourteenth-century painter Wang Meng.
