Fragrance Permeating Three Paths
Miu Guying Chinese
Not on view
Miu Guying specialized in chrysanthemums. In his inscription on this very finely drawn fan, he traces the history of line drawing from Li Gonglin's (1049–1106) figure drawing and landscapes through Shen Zhou (1427–1509) and Tang Yin (1470–1523), who used the technique for chrysanthemums.
The Song roots of Miu's descriptive drawing and his scrupulous fidelity to the forms and structure of his subject call attention to China's own realist tradition, which remained alive as an ideal, alongside China's fascination with Western realism.
