This double page spread in "Harper's Weekly" illustrates seven popular Civil War era songs. Smaller scenes in an upper register, from left show charging soldiers urged on by a drummer boy, illustrating the song “The bold soldier boy”; a general on horseback reviewing trrops illustrating “Hail to the Chief”; a group of soldiers fighting and resting illustrates “We’ll be free and easy still”; and three disgruntled soldiers walking through camp, illustrate “Rogues March.” Below a large image of marching soldiers relates to “Glory Hallelujah”; a picture of a woman hanging behind the soldiers illustrates “The Girl I Left Behind Me”; and an interior centered on a man seated on a barrel labeled “Contraband” relates to “Dixie.”
