Brush Holder with Literary Gathering

1736–95
Not on view
Famous historical literary gatherings were a favorite subject in painting and the decorative arts. The party on this rare silver brush holder may allude to the Gathering in the Western Garden, a legendary assembly of literary luminaries held in the city of Kaifeng in 1087.
