Brush Holder with Literary Gathering

Famous historical literary gatherings were a favorite subject in painting and the decorative arts from the Song dynasty (960–1279) onward. The party on this rare silver brush holder may allude to the Gathering in the Western Garden, a legendary assembly of literary luminaries held in the capital city of Kaifeng in 1087.
