Roundel with Mounted Horseman Spearing a Lion
This roundel was cut, perhaps in antiquity, from a repeat pattern silk textile and typifies a type of ruler/hero/saint imagery that spread throughout the Byzantine Empire. Silks with such intricate patterns were woven on draw looms.
