Cruciform Pendant

Not on view

Cruciform pendants, such as this example, are sometimes referred to as "Southern Crosses", indicating their origins in the regions of modern-day Mauretania and Mali. Such jewels were suspended from necklaces and other pectoral ornaments worn by Amazigh (Berber) women in Morocco. The shape also emulates an amulet box, suggesting that the form of this jewel would have had a protective function.
