7397. Ritual Wine Container (Hu)
Today we take for granted the green patina on ancient bronzes like this vessel. But this object is an exceptional example. Much of the surface still gleams with its original luster. When this wine jar was new in the fifth century B.C., the bronze had a brilliant whitish surface, almost like tin. Bronze wine jars of this shape played a role in ancient Chinese rituals, and perhaps were used at banquets as well. The three tiny animals sitting on top may represent mythical creatures. Look closely at the rest of the vessel. Feel the textured surface with your eyes. The patterns you see were based on the raised relief patterns seen on gold vessels from this period. Initially bronze casters duplicated these textures using pattern blocks, or molds. Over time, they also began to embellish the bronze surface by inlaying with more colorful metals, such as gold, silver and, as is the case with this piece, red copper.
