The legged panel was possibly part of a sarir, a large chair or throne, on which the owner sat cross legged. The prominent Kufic inscription offers "Blessing and good fortune and happiness and felicity to its owner." The handsomely carved, stylized decoration reflects the impact of the beveled style found at the Abbasid capital Samarra on Egyptian art during the rule of Ibn Tulun (r. 864–84).
