Second Seal of the Cathedral Chapter
Not on view
This wax seal shows the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child flanked by the patrons of the cathedral, Saints Godehard and Epiphanius. The seal can be dated by its use in charters issued by the cathedral chapter: While its predecessor can last be found on documents dated July 1244, this seal was attached to a charter of January 25, 1245. Thus, the seal’s stamp was probably made during the second half of 1244. It was used until 1296.
