Guntbald Gospels
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.This manuscript contains a full-page image of Christ in Majesty—the enthroned God encircled by symbols of the Evangelists—and colorful Evangelist portraits introducing each book of the Gospels. At the end of the book, its scribe, Guntbald, writes that he produced it in 1011, during Bernward’s episcopate. Also attributed to Guntbald are a pericope book, a psalter, and the Guntbald Sacramentary (nearby), suggesting that Bernward commissioned him to produce the four books necessary to celebrate Mass.
