Lock

ca. 1800
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This lock comes from the front door of "Vaucluse," a house in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, built about 1800. The door was formerly in the American Wing collection but has been deaccessioned. The present lock may antedate the door it was on, as it seems to be in a 1760–80 style. However, because the door with which the lock was used is known to have been built around 1800, it remains dated to that period until more conclusive evidence regarding its date can be found.
