Beauty by the Shore
Shunman, who was known primarily as a literary figure, studied painting under Kitao Shigemasa (1739–1820). He was also inspired by Torii Kiyonaga (1725–1815), a famed painter of beauties, or bijin. In addition to his nikuhitsu ukiyo-e, or painted images of the "floating world," Shunman is well known for his finely designed and produced surimono prints. This painting was produced before Shunman had formed his mature style, likely before the year 1785.
