Crewe Hall a Jacobean mansion in Cheshire, built 1615–36 for Sir Randolph Crewe, as one of the largest houses in England. Extensions were added in the late 18th century, alterations made by Edward Blore in the 19th century, and restorationsby E. M. Barry carried out after a fire in 1866. This album contains wash drawings that record Elizabethan and Jacobean-style carved ornament on ceilings, pendants, and panels. The imagery is similar, but not exactly the same, to that shown in lithographed plates of Crewe Hall published in volume I of Charles James Richardson's "Studies from Old English Mansions," 1841 (see 1991.1073.61(1)).
