This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
The celebrated landscape and marine painter Joseph Vernet (1714–1789) encouraged Vigée to "paint as much as you can from nature." She was twenty-three when her mentor sat for this sympathetic if formal portrayal.
