This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.Jade, the most esteemed natural material in ancient China, was sometimes used to copy works in other media. This bowl may have been modeled on similar examples in glass, in particular a type found only in southern coastal China, a center of robust and frequent trade with foreign cultures.
