Floral Still Life

Dirck van Rijswijck

Not on view

Trained as a goldsmith, Van Rijswijck was celebrated during his lifetime for his inlay work with mother-of-pearl in ebony or black marble, a technique in which he created mostly "pictures" as well as several tabletops. This still-life, one of the larger pieces known by the artist, depicts spring and summer flowers and includes small insects. The importation of exotic shells into Amsterdam stimulated shell collecting as well as the working of mother-of-pearl by local artists.
