Summer Kimono (Katabira) with Blades of Grass and Dewdrops

Not on view

The designs of these unlined summer kimonos reflect the move toward abstraction in art of the early twentieth century. In this example, dewdrops sparkle amid highly stylized purple and orange blades of grass, which seem to sway. The lightweight hemp fabric with a crepe-like texture, the subtle pastel hues, and the dewdrops of couched silver threads all recall the cool of the early morning, making this kimono perfectly suited for summertime wear.
