Tatyana Borisovna Potemkina
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.Suffering from lung disease, Madame Potemkina (1797–1869), accompanied by her husband, left Russia to seek medical treatment abroad. They visited England, Switzerland, and Italy, and in Paris she posed for Vigée Le Brun. The painter suggests the sitter’s reserve and withdrawal, qualities reinforced by the atmospheric background.
