Tatyana Borisovna Potemkina

Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun French

Not on view

Suffering from lung disease, Madame Potemkina (1797–1869), accompanied by her husband, left Russia to seek medical treatment abroad. They visited England, Switzerland, and Italy, and in Paris she posed for Vigée Le Brun. The painter suggests the sitter’s reserve and withdrawal, qualities reinforced by the atmospheric background.
