Bell rubbing with Saint Otto of Bamberg, from "Otto-Glocke," Castle Church, Szczecin, Poland
Not on view
This rubbing, taken from a bell formerly in the Schlosskirche of the Pomeranian town of Sczczecin (or Stettin, in modern-day Poland), shows the bishop saint Otto of Bamberg with his hand extended in blessing over a large chalice, which serves as a baptismal font for three small figures. From a set of rubbings made from reliefs on bells ranging from the 13th to 16th century from Germany, Sweden and Denmark. The provenance of the rubbings is unknown, although several reproduce bells that were damaged or destroyed during the Second World War. This set seems to be unique in documenting medieval bell decorations.
