On the basis of linguistic evidence, historians have proposed that the woodland savannas of the Loango coast were settled by northern migrants from the region of western Cameroon between four and five thousand years ago. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of the use of ceramics and stone tools by sedentary populations going back three thousand years. Pottery vessels inscribed with geometric patterns distinct to Kongo decorative arts have been found dating from the late Iron Age.
