Mosque Lamp of Sultan al-Zahir Baybars
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. The light that emanated from this pierced metal lamp was surely more suited to creating an atmosphere of mystery and reverence than to reading. Indeed, the inscription reveals that it was made for the tomb of Sultan Baybars (reigned 1260–1277), who played a significant role in expelling the Franks from the Holy Land.
