A Young Woman Standing with her Hands on her Hips (La Coquette)
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. This appealing drawing of a young woman in a robe à l’anglaise, a dress with a snug-fitting bodice and sleeves, belongs to a group of similar sketches Fragonard made before departing on his second Italian journey in 1773. The sitter engages us with her direct gaze, but her features are not specific enough for the work to be considered a portrait, nor is her dress detailed enough to consider this a costume study. Nonetheless, the work displays the brio and skill that made Fragonard’s large-scale sketches of young women attractive to collectors.
