Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
Painted by Mademoiselle Vigée at eighteen, this portrait of her brother Etienne (1758–1820) gives evidence of her exceptional talent. He is presented as a draftsman holding an artist’s portfolio and porte-crayon. Etienne later developed a reputation as a witty poet and playwright, but he fell from grace with his sister when he opportunistically switched sides during the French Revolution.
