Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.The lavishly dressed Prince of Nassau (1745–1808) wears the ribbon of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest decoration of merit. In 1766, he joined the expedition of Louis Antoine de Bougainville to explore the South Pacific. He points to Bougainville’s 1771 travelogue, Voyage Around the World, which brought renown to the expedition’s participants.
