The Bread Box

Jean Honoré Fragonard French

Not on view

In limpid layers of golden brown wash, Fragonard celebrates the simple joys of rustic domesticity. Communal scenes, such as this vignette showing two women distributing bread to villagers, allow for a broad cast of characters, from animals to barefoot toddlers to old men.
