Concert

Valentin de Boulogne French

Not on view

Valentin here rethinks the single- or three-figure concert picture popularized by Caravaggio and his followers, augmenting the number and varying the activities of the participants. He retains the associations of music, wine, and love but complicates the subject through his depiction of gesture and glance and the arrival of a gypsy, who we witness pickpocketing a musician. Compromised by past damages, the picture has been transformed by restoration undertaken for this exhibition.
